Marigold, A Sydney YUM CHA INSTITUTION, is attracting hordes of customers after announcing it will close its doors next month.
For almost 40 years, over three locations, Marigold has been serving up some of Sydney’s most sought-after yum cha.
The George St incarnation – with its regal red and gold carpet and lavish mirrors and chandelier – opened in the CityMark building at Haymarket in 1991, occupying levels four and five.
Over the years it has attracted generations of diners eager to sample its Cantonese-style fare, including fluffy pork buns, sticky har gow and sweet mango pancakes.
Announcing its closure, the restaurant said in a statement: “The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way we live, work and travel. Sadly, it has also hit Marigold’s function business and weekday trading. As there are plans to extend the CityMark Building, it is time to say goodbye.”
The famed restaurant serves up its last yum cha on Sunday, December 5.
If you want to experience Marigold before its gone for good, the Haymarket restaurant at 683 George Street is open seven days a week between 10am and 3pm for yum cha and à la carte, and from 5.30pm to 9.30pm each day for à la carte dinner and dim sum degustations.
Be prepared to queue one last time. But rest assured, the wait is worth it.

I wouldn’t be surprised if they reopen somewhere else in Chinatown. In the meantime they’re doing a roaring trade.
