HCMC: Mariamman Temple – A Burst of Colour In Old Saigon

Possibly the last thing you'd expect to find in the pulsing heart of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam's biggest commercial city, is a sacred Hindu temple. 



But here, in a country where fewer than 60,000 identify as Hindu, you'll find the majestic Mariamman Temple. 



Located at 45 Truong Dinh Street in District 1, just a two minute walk from Ben Thanh Market, the temple is dedicated to Mariamman, the goddess of rain. 



Mariamman is believed to have miraculous powers and many Vietnamese, Chinese and Indian worshippers come to pray for peace, prosperity and a bountiful harvest. 



A 12-metre ‘Gopuram’ (tower) above the main entrance (pictured below) features colourful statues of many different Hindu gods and goddesses. 

Ceremonial offerings take place twice a day for 30 minutes at 10 am and 7 pm to pray for good weather and peace. 



The temple is open every day from 7.30 am to noon and 1.30 pm to 8 pm for worshippers and tourists alike. 

Just remember to remove your shoes before entering.
