The historic Long Biên Bridge over the Red River is one of Hanoi’s iconic structures. The 2,290 metre-long (1.4 mile) cantilever bridge, built between 1898 and 1902, was bombed several times by American forces during the Vietnam war, but was quickly repaired by locals. Scooters buzz past constantly during peak hour, trains rumble across and pedestrians have to scramble over crumbling concrete slabs. The bridge connects Hanoi’s Old Quarter with the district of Long Biên.
